Offered for sale less than two months after the death of Elizabeth Taylor, “Liz #5 (Early Colored Liz)” is a magnificent testament to Andy Warhol’s fascination with celebrity and mass media. The work, which came from the collection of Ileana Sonnabend, was sold for a respectable $26,962,500.

It was a good night for Philips de Pury & Company, who is often overshadowed by Christie’s and Sotheby’s. Simon de Pury, Chairman of the auctions house, said that he was “thrilled” with the results of the auction, explaining that “our results tonight are more than double this time last year“.

Another work by Warhol, “Flowers”, sold for $8,146,500, the second highest price of the night; and Roy Lichtenstein’s “Still life with Mirror” realized $6,578,500. 78% of the lots offered found a buyer, achieving a total of $98,825,500.
