Turner’s La donna della salute sold for an auction record

A work by Joseph Mallord William Turner has smashed the auction record for a British painting (£10.7 million in 1990 for Constable’s The Lock , currently at the Thyssen collection) Giudecca, la Donna della Salute and San Giorgio , executed in 1841, sold for $35,8 million at Christie’s New York, doubling its estimate of only $15 – 20 million. The previous auction record for a work by Turner was a mere $9 million, set by the almost abstract Seascape, Folkestone in 1984.
