Gerhard Richter
Painted in 1982, “Kerze (Candle)” is one of the finest examples from the artist’s series of candle paintings realized between 1982 and 1983. “Thirty years after it was made, like all great art, it continues to reflect its times and change its meaning to successive generations“, said Francis Outred, Christie’s Head of Post-War & Contemporary Art.
The work is estimated to realise £6,000,000 – 9,000,000 / US$9,100,000 – 14,000,000 / €6,800,000 – 10,000,000. Last year, another painting from this series, titled “Two Candles (499-2)” sold at Christie’s for $12.9 million, just over its $12 million low estimate.
In addition to “Kerze”, the auction will also include four abstract paintings by Richter including “Sumpf (Marsh”) (1983), “Abstraktes Bild” (1988), “Grat (5)” (1989) and “Abstraktes Bild” (1992)
Richard Prince
Created in 1999, “Untitled (Cowboy)”, presents a denim-clad lonesome American ranger, and is a magnificent example of Richard Prince’s famous “cowboy” series. The work is estimated at £1,000,000 – 1,500,000 / US$1,600,000 – 2,300,000. Another work by Prince, “Nurse Forrester’s Secret” carries an estimate of £2,100,000-3,000,000 / US$3,200,000-4,700,000.
