Thus, in the auction of old masters painting at Sotheby’ s, January 25 th 2007, a work by Rembrandt entitled “Saint James the greater”, signed and dated 1661, measuring 36 ¼ x 29 ½ inches (92,1 – 79,9 cm ), was sold for $28,5, a auction record for the artist, surpassing its estimaion between $18 and $25 million. At the same auction, a painting by Spanish master Zurbarán entitled “Christ and the Virgin in the House of Nazareth” (estimated $1.5 -2 million) was sold for $3,5 million, and the two surprises of the sale were the “Announcement” by Greco, that was sold for almost $4. 2 million (estimated: $800.000), and the “Portrait of the Captain Robert Shore Milnes”, by Joseph Wright of Derby , sold for $7,2 million (estimation: $1 – 1,5 million)
Another Rembrandt for the Rijksmuseum
While, the main museum of Dutch art, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, which houses the world best collection of works by Rembrandt, is trying to acquire another masterpiece by the Dutch master, the “Portrait of Catrina Hooghsaet”, in a British private collection, for a price that could reach the 40 million pounds, which would be the second highest price ever paid for an old master painting. The imposing work, dated in 1657, is now temporary lent to the Dutch Museum .
