Of course Rembrandt… Night Watch
Rembrandt hits the Art world news
Do you think that Rembrandt’s activity ended more than three centuries ago? Think it twice, my friend.
First of all, exhibitions commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Dutch master are being inaugurated all around the world. The later is organized by the National Museum of Copenhagen, with works by the master and disciples such as Gerard Dou or Gover Flinck.
Also, two oil paintings from the Royal Castle Museum of Warsaw have been reattributed to Rembrandt by Dutch expert Ernst van de Wetering. Both pictures -“Girl with a hat” and “Master in the pulpit”- had been donated to Poland in 1994. It’s not a great surprise -at least not for me- that this find had been announced in the much-hyped anniversary year. Remember the 400th anniversary of Velázquez (1998)? Remember “Santa Rufina”, “The tears of Saint Peter”, etc .?
Well, if you really like Rembrandt, and you have a few dozens of millions to spend, Salander o’Reilly galleries will exhibit an important Rembrandt -“The Apostle James the Major”- at TEFAF Maastricht. Its price has not been revealed, but expect a minimum of $30 million. Remember that a “Minerva” by the same artist had been offered for sale at Maastricht a few years ago with an asking price of more than $40 million.
And for more modest pockets, Christie’s have announced that a large group of 55 etchings by the Dutch master will be offered for sale next May 29th , with an estimated total of £500,000.
Not a bad activity for a 400 year old grandpa, isn’t it?
