Painted in 1932, “La Rêve (The Dream)” is one of Picasso’s most sensual and famous paintings, depicting her lover Marie-Therese Walter sitting on a red armchair with her eyes closed.
In 2006, Steve Wynn agreed to sell the painting to Steven Cohen for an astonishing $139 million, which would had been the highest price ever paid for a painting, surpassing the $135 million paid for Gustav Klimt’s “Adele Bloch bauer”. However, the sale was cancelled when Mr. Wynn accidentally plunged his elbow into the canvas, making a considerable hole in it. In 1997, the work was sold at Christie’s New York for $48.4 million.
The new owner, Steven A. Cohen, is one of the most important art collectors in the world, and his personal collection includes Willem de Kooning’s “Woman III” (acquired in 2006 for $137.5 million) and Damien Hirst’s “The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living”.
