Sotheby’s auction on December 7th will be highlighted by Jan Havicksz Steen’s “An elegant company in an interior with figures playing cards at a table”. Described in the catalogue as “a masterpiece of seventeenth-century Dutch genre painting”, the lot carries an estimate of £4,5 – 6 million.
A pair of works by Johann Zoffany, titled “The Garden at Hampton House, with Mr and Mrs David Garrick taking tea” and “The Shakespeare Temple at Hampton House, with Mr and Mrs David Garrick” carry the highest estimate of the auction (£6 – 8 million). A typical “Portrait of a lady” by Lucas Cranach is estimated at £800,000 – 1,200,000
Christie’s Old Master and British Paintings Sale on December 6th will be lead by “Portrait of Juan López de Robredo” by Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828)(estimate: £4 million to £6 million). As the catalogue explains, “the brilliance of this picture resides in the sympathetic manner in which Goya flatters his sitter whilst also indicating Robredo’s vanity”.
“The Battle between Carnival and Lent” is a classic work by Pieter Brueghel II, and carries an estimate of £3.5 million to £4.5 million. A full length “Portrait of Philip Stanhope, 5th Earl of Chesterfield (1755-1815)” by Thomas Gainsborough is expected to sell for £2.5 million to £3.5 million.
