Famous artist Lucian Freud dies at 88 years old British painter Lucian Freud, one of the great painters of the twentieth century and famous for his large nudes, has died at 88 years old.]]>

Two weeks after the death of Cy Twombly, another one of the greatest painters of the second half of the twentieth century, Lucian Freud, has died in London at 88 years old, his art dealer William R. Acquavella said yesterday.
Along with Francis Bacon (1909-1992), Freud was the most famous artist of the so-called “The School of London”, a group of painters famous for their figurative style during the boom years of abstract painting. Freud’s portraits are known for their psychological penetration, and the artist used to spend a great deal of time with each canvas. In 2001, Freud painted Queen Elizabeth II, and the portrait was criticised by some British tabloids.
In May 2008, one of his most famous works, “Benefits Supervisor Sleeping” (1995), was sold at Christie’s New York for $33.6 million, at the time a world auction record for a painting by a living artist.
