“I Can See the Whole Room…and There’s Nobody in It” was created in 1961, the same year as Lichtenstein’s first true comic-strip painting, “Look Mickey”. The previous record for a work by Lichtenstein was the $42.6 million paid one year ago for “Ohhh…Alright”, painted in 1964.
At the same auction, Mark Rothko’s “White Cloud” (estimated at $18-25 million) sold for $18,562,500; Andy Warhol’s “Silver Liz” (estimated at $16-18 million) fetched $16,322,500, and Louise Bourgeois’ “Spider” sold for $10,722,500, setting a new auction record for the artist.
The auction totaled $247,597,000, with 82 of 91 lots finding buyers.
