“Reason must know the heart’s reasons and every other reason”
Leonora Carrington
Carrington was born in Clayton Green, Lancashire. In 1937 she met surrealist painter Max Ernst, with whom she started a relationship. Ernst -26 years older than her- was later arrested by the Gestapo and forced to flee to America, which ended their relationship. In 1942, Carrington moved to Mexico.
Carrington became a well known surrealist painter, exhibiting at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York City in 1947. She was good friends with other surrealist painters, especially with Remedios Varo.
In 2005, she was awarded with the National Prize for Arts. In the same year, Christie’s New York sold her “Juggler” for $713,000, then an auction record for the artist. In 2009, her “The Giantess (The Guardian of the Egg)” was sold for $1,482,500 at the same auction house, breaking the previous record.
