With this acquisition, Herb Ritts joins a group of artists in the Getty’s collection who also established a reputation for their fashion photographs, including Robert Mapplethorpe, Richard Avedon, William Klein and Man Ray.

This acquisition not only helps build our collection of fashion photography, but also fulfills our commitment to collect bodies of works by Los Angeles-based artists“, said Judith Keller, curator of photographs at the Getty.

Highlights from the acquisition include “Stephanie, Cindy, Christy, Tatjana, Naomi, Hollywood (1989)”, which, according to the Museum, is “an iconic image that has come to define the era of the Supermodel“.

Born in Los Angeles in 1952, Ritts majored in art history at the Bard College in New York. During the 80s and the 90s, he photographed several celebrities, including his friend Richard Gere, Brooke Shields, Michael Jackson, Madonna and Michael Jordan. Ritts also directed some music videos, such as Madonna’s “Cherish” and Michael Jackson’s “In the Closet”. Herb Ritts died from complications from pneumonia on December 26, 2002.
