Work by Goya stolen in Ohio
Updated November 24th 2006: the FBI has announced that the painting has been recovered
The Guggenheim Museum’s exhibition of “5 centuries of Spanish painting: from El Greco to Picasso” has suffered its first negative incident: a painting by Francisco de Goya, “Niños en el carretón” (“Children with a Cart”), have been stolen while being delivered to the New York Museum .
The early work by Goya, dated 1778, was owned by the Toledo Museum of Art in Toledo , Ohio , and is insured for $1 million, though its real value, in case of going to the public Art market, would be very higher.
According to the American museum, this is the first work pertaining to this institution that is stolen in more than a century of existence. Nevertheless, it’s not the first significant work by Goya stolen in recent times: in 2001, two important works by this artist (“El columpio” and “La caída del burro”) were stolen from the collection of Alicia Koplowitz in Madrid . In addition, it has been recently recovered in Podgorica the “Conde Ugolino della Gherardesca”, a small painting by Goya stolen from a Torino private collection.
