April 8th 2007 – Now that artworks by well-known contemporary artists reached astronomical prices in galleries and auction houses, artists Gilbert & George (Gilbert Proesch, Italy, 1943; and George Passmore, England, 1942) have launched a challenge to Art market with a innovative act: their most recent work, “Planed”, can be downloaded from the Guardian and BBC websites from May 8 th 2007, 11.30pm to May 10 th 2007, 11:30 p.m.
Famous and polemical, Gilbert and George were initially known as performance artists, while they are now famous for their large-scale photomontages, some of which have caused controversies: their 2005 exhibition Was Jesus Heterosexual was seriously criticized for its anti-religious sense. Nevertheless, such controversies have not stopped their international recognition: In 1986, they won the prestigious Turner Prize, and represented the UK at the 2005 Biennale de Venezia.
