Twombly, who had been living in Italy since 1957, died in Rome after battling cancer for several years.
Cy Twombly was born in Lexington, Virginia, in 1928. He studied at the Lee University in his hometown, at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and at the Art Students League of New York, where he met artist Robert Rauschenberg. In 1957, he moved to Rome.
Twombly was famous for his “Calligraphic” paintings, using words and repetitive lines. On May 11th, 2011, his “Untitled” for 1967 was sold at Christie’s for $15,202,500, an auction record for Twombly.
His work was the subject of several exhibitions, including those at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Tate Modern in London. In 2001, Twombly was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale.
