The “Codex Calixtinus” is considered one of the most important manuscripts of medieval Europe, and the greatest literary treasure of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. Its 225 pages were created as a guide for pilgrims on the “Camino de Santiago” (the Way of St. James), in addition to collecting various stories related to St. James.
The book disappeared from the archives of the Cathedral on July 5th, 2011, but its disappearance was not announced until the following day. Not many details of the theft have been revealed, but Dean José María Díaz declared that whoever stole the manuscript “knows how valuable it was and how to get to it”.
An extremely valuable work
Although it is impossible to sell this work in the open market, its economic value is enormous. The only manuscript comparable in historical and artistic importance to the “Codex Calixtinus” that has come to auction in recent decades is the “Gospel Book of Henry the Lion,” sold at auction in 1983 for £8,14 million.
