Marking the centenary of Egon Schiele’s death, this exhibition places a focus not only on the artist himself but also on the Belvedere’s extensive holdings of his work. It explores all of Schiele’s works that were once or are still part of the museum’s collection. In addition, the exhibition examines and present the collection’s history based on individual works. “Egon Schiele: Pathways to a Collection” can be seen from 19 October 2018 at the Orangery in the Lower Belvedere.
Curated by Kerstin Jesse, the exhibition takes a close look at each of the works, examining aspects such as acquisition, subject matter, and the portrayed person while also presenting the paintings together with preliminary studies and related works. A further focus of this ambitious show considers the history and politics behind Austrian public collections through the example of the Belvedere’s Schiele holdings. In this context, it will shed light on the full former extent of the collection and its constant changes as a result of Hans Tietze’s Museum Reform, picture exchanges, and restitution.
Highlights of the exhibition include “Die Umarmung” from 1917, “House Wall (Windows)” from 1914, “City on the Blue River II” from 1911, “Four Trees” from 1917 and “Portrait of Wally Neuzil”, from 1912
