Although the permanent collection of the Prado Museum includes more than 50 works by Ribera, only one of them (“The Raising of Lazarus” bought in 2001 for 2,5 million euros) belongs to the early stage of his artistic career, a period of Ribera’s career that was almost completely unknown until recently .
Featuring 32 works by the artist, ‘The Young Ribera’ is the first exhibition ever devoted to the formative period of the artist. Including the two most important series that Ribera executed during this period (“Apostle Series” and “The Five Senses”), the exhibition has been posible thanks to the generous loans of many museums and private collections. As the press note of the exhibition says, “the exhibition will allow visitors to discover the subjects that most interested the young painter and to understand the way in which his style evolved and developed to the point where Ribera became one of the most original and powerful naturalist painters subsequent to Caravaggio”
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue that includes essays by experts such as Gabriele Finaldi or José Milicua.
