The works exhibited range from the second half of the nineteenth century, with works by Honoré Daumier and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (whose ‘Divan Japonais’ is arguably the most recognizable work in the exhibition), to the mid 20th century artists, including works by Italian artists Carlo Carrà and Giorgio de Chirico. An excellent selection of early 20th century prints and drawings is present, including works by Amedeo Modigliani, Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso.

Organized into seven thematic categories (studies -drawings and sketches-, nudes, individual figure and groups, portraits, the eloquence of the image -emblems and allegories-, the urban landscape, and ‘paper as media’), the exhibition shows the visitor a few little-known but quite interesting works: ‘Les Amateurs d’estampes (The stamps collectors), one of the oldest pieces in the exhibition, shows the typical style of Honore Daumier, the prolific draftsman who caricatured the political and social figures in France in the 19th century. ‘Three standing nudes and studies of heads’w as created by Picasso in 1927, the year he met his muse Marie-Thérèse Walter. ‘Fillette (Figure)’ is a late work by Henri Mattisse, a simple but very expressive drawing. Finally, a small, brownish carton entitled ‘Landscape’ proves that the artistic interests of Federico García Lorca went well beyond literature.

In addition, MALBA has prepared a 200 pages catalog about the exhibition, in English and Spanish, which includes the biographies of the artists in the exhibition, as well as texts by Eduardo F. Costantini and Guillermo Alonso, among others.
