Founded in 2004, Claire Fontaine is a Paris-based artist collective self-defined as a “readymade artist”. Its works propose an open reflection driven by social critique, analysing relationships between the individual and the spheres of power.
The title of the exhibition, P.I.G.S., uses the acronym created by financial media to pejoratively refer to Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain since the late 2000s recession. P.I.G.S. is also the name of one of the three installations of the exhibition, a map of Europe that only shows Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain, created with hundreds of matchsticks to be ignited during the exhibition.
The second work in the exhibition is CAPITALISM KILLS LOVE, a fluorescent light sign occupying the whole of the space. The third and last work is Private (2010), a pressure cable attached to an industrial bell that sets off a loud sound when spectators step on it.
