Bridge Art Fair 2009

Following a highly acclaimed debut in 2008, Bridge New York 09 returns to the historic Waterfront Building, located in Manhattan’s Chelsea’s Gallery District.

Taking place during the celebrated New York Armory Art Week, Bridge New York is noted as one of the most influential presenters of international emerging contemporary art, and it is a top destination for collectors, curators and arts patrons. Bridge New York 09 will feature over 50 exhibitors, a large percentage of which will be international.

Building on the success of last year’s film and performance projects, Bridge New York 09 will showcase a greatly expanded performance program, featuring internationally acclaimed artists and curators. As in 2008, Bridge New York 09 will partner with major cultural institutions, cultural arts organizations, publications and local and international business to present a full schedule of parties, receptions, tours and special projects, to be announced in the coming months.

Bridge New York ’08 will present more than 60 international exhibitors from such diverse locales as Austria, Canada, China, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Korea, the Philippines, Spain, Switzerland, the UK, and the United States.

“After a very successful debut in 2008, we are excited to return to New York– the undisputed center of the art world—with expanded programming and excellent support from our cultural partners and sponsors,” says Founder and Director, Michael Workman.

ARTPORT_COOL STORIES II
Artport-Cool Stories II will be the second edition of the international art video project, COOL STORIES FOR WHEN THE PLANET GETS HOT, which was launched by ARTPORT at Scope Basel in 2007. For this new edition, ARTPORT proposes a collaboration with Bridge Art Fair, inviting video artists worldwide to participate in a contest that explores Global Warming from various angles—its causes, manifestations, and solutions; local and international. The winners of the contest will be screened at Bridge Art Fair in Basel in June 2009.

SECOND FRONT
Al Hansen’s Car Bibbe II By Second Front, Directed by Patrick LichtyThis virtual “Happening” is an interpretation of an original, unrealized Al Hansen text presented by Second Front member Bibbe Hansen. Car Bibbe II, unlike the Car Symphony #1, is a cycle of three actions; demolition of a Cadillac Fleetwood, scores of ballet dancers, and a horde of maintenance engineers. The original Hansen text is presented in its entirety, live in the virtual world of Second Life, previously unrealized due to liability issues. Second Front is the pioneering performance art group in the online avatar-based VR world, Second Life. Second Front creates theatres of the absurd that challenge notions of virtual embodiment, online performance and the formation of virtual narrative.

ARTOUT
ARTOUT is an experimental art service that allows art lovers to spend time with artists, to get into their minds and hear first hand what they believe and how they represent it through their work.

EXTREMELY HUNGARY: a yearlong festival showcasing contemporary Hungarian arts.
Extremely Hungary is a yearlong festival showcasing contemporary Hungarian visual, performing, and literary arts in New York and Washington, D.C., throughout 2009. The festival reveals the roots of Hungary’s thriving contemporary culture and its impact on American society through a broad spectrum of events at leading cultural institutions in the two cities. Extremely Hungary is organized by the Hungarian Cultural Center in New York. The festival is made possible in part by funding from the Hungarian Ministry of Education and Culture, and the participation of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The festival’s chairpersons are George Soros and Kati Marton.
