MOCA presents ‘Art in the Streets’ The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles presents ‘Art in the Streets’, the first major U.S. museumexhibition devoted to the history of graffiti and street art. The exhibition started with controversy, as several L.A. Raw Activists protested against the erasing of an anti-war mural by BLU.

The exhibition
Featuring installations by 50 artists from the graffiti and street art world, including Barry McGee (San Francisco), Os Gemeos (São Paulo) and -of course- Banksy (London), the exhibition is an impressive showcase of graffiti and street art from the 1970s to our days. According to MOCA’s Director Jeffrey Deitch, the show is “the first exhibition to position the work of the most influential artists to emerge from street culture in the context of contemporary art history”.
The exhibition emphasizes Los Angeles’s role in the evolution of graffiti and street art, and it includes works by influential local artists such as RETNA, SABER, REVOK, and RISK.
‘Art in the Streets’ will be on view at the MOCA from April 17 through August 8, 2011. Then it will travel to the Brooklyn Museum, where it will be exhibited from March 30 to July 8, 2012.
The protests
On the day of the opening (April 16) several artists from the ‘L.A. Raw’ Group vigorously protested against the erasing of an anti-war mural by Italian graffiti artist BLU. Up to now, MOCA has not released any press note regarding this issue.
