Arguably the most famous Chinese artist of the 21st century, Ai Weiwei gained international attention earlier this year, when he was arrested by the Chinese police. After being released, Weiwei returned to work on his numerous projects.
“Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads” shows twelve monumental bronze animal heads, re-creations of the famous traditional zodiac sculptures from the fountain clock of the Old Summer Palace, outside Beijing, China. Beginning in December 2011, the group of 12 bronze figures will be accompanied by four jade zodiac animals from the collection of the LACMA.
The exhibition is on view outdoors just east of the Lynda and Stewart Resnick Exhibition Pavilion.
“Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads” will be displayed in at the LACMA till February 12, 2012. Then, the group will travel to Houston (February 25 – June 1, 2012), Washington (June 21 – August 9, 2012), and Pittsburgh (October 1 – December 31, 2012).
