Three of the Evening Sale’s top five lots were purchased by Asian private collectors, including Vincent van Gogh’s “L’Allée des Alyscamps” which led the auction with $66.3 million (estimate in excess of $40 million). The work last sold at auction in 2003 for $11.8 million. In total, collectors from Asia competed for more than 30% of the lots on offer, with winning bids accounting for more than 30% of the sale’s $368.3 million result.

Five works by Claude Monet totaled $115.4 million, led by his “Nymphéas” from 1905 that sold for $54 million to an American private collector. “Le Palais ducal” sold for $23.1 million, and “Bassin aux nymphéas, les rosiers” fetched $20.4 million.

The auction included several works from The Goldwyn Collection – assembled by Hollywood legends Samuel Goldwyn Sr. & Jr. – included Pablo Picasso’s “Femme au chignon dans un fauteuil”, which sold for $29.9 million to an Asian private collector (estimate $12/18 million)

Two works by Alberto Giacometti also did well: his “Femme de Venise VI” sold for $16.2 million, and “Buste de Diego (Aménophis)” realized $12.8 million.
