In 2016 there are major unveilings at the Fair, which significantly contribute to the canon of art history. Talabardon & Gautier (Stand 374) is presenting a newly discovered, very early work by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669). Purchased at auction in 2015 where the work was catalogued at ‘Continental School, Nineteenth Century’, meticulous academic research and cleaning by the gallery has revealed the work to be “The Unconscious Patient (Smell)”, c.1624-25, oil on panel, which was executed when Rembrandt was only 18 or 19 years old. In addition, an example of, what is believed to be, one of Rembrandt’s earliest signatures was discovered during cleaning. One of the highest value objects at the Fair is a Book of Hours by the Limbourg brothers. This previously unknown illuminated manuscript on vellum contains 30 drawings; the script and drawings were produced before 1407; in 1408 a quire was added and all but one of the ivy leaf borders were executed, offered by Antiquariat Bibermuehle AG Heribert Tenschert (Stand 214). It has an 8-figure asking price.

Richard Green (Stand 302) has spent five years building a collection of works by Eugène Boudin, and these works are presented alongside the works of other artists who have either been inspired by or have inspired Boudin. This contextual exhibition will give viewers a rounded view of Boudin’s work.

An extraordinary collection of graphic drawings by Renè Magritte (1898-1967) which was first compiled by William Weston Gallery (Stand 527) in the 1970s, has come back to the gallery and will be presented in its entirety at the Fair. A collection of this scope and calibre would be near impossible to create now, making this an exceptional treasure of the TEFAF Modern section. “Au Bord de l’Eau”, 1885, oil on canvas, by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), one of the fathers of Impressionism, is an exceptional work from the artist that makes its debut on the open market for the first time in a century at Dickinson (Stand 402).
