Thieves stole paintings by Picasso and Portinari in Sao Paulo, Brazil ]]>

December 21th 2007 – Last night, around 5:00 in the morning, three thieves entered the Sao Paulo Museum of Art and took two paintings, considered to be among the most valuable of the collection: “O lavrador de café”, by Cândido Portinari, and the most valuable of the two: ” Portrait of Suzanne Bloch ” by Pablo Picasso. The estimated value of the paintings, according to the Museum, is around 70 million dollars).

Two months ago, two men tried to reach the second floor of the museum, where the stolen paintings were located, but they ran away before taking anything.

Also, it is not the first Art theft in Brazil in recent times: on February 26th 2006, a group of armed thefts stole from the Chacara do Ceu Museum four important modern paintings; among them a Picasso entitled “The dance”, and a “Seascape” by Claude Monet.
