“Portrait of Madame Brunet” is an early work by Manet, depicting a young woman in black standing against a somewhat boring landscape. The painting had been recently acquired by the Getty Museum for an undisclosed price.

The Getty already owns an important work by Édouard Manet, the much more interesting “The Rue Mosnier with Flags” acquired in 1989 for $26.4 million. “While ‘The Rue Mosnier with Flags’ represents Manet’s impressionistic, and politically charged, consideration of the modern city, the earlier Portrait of Madame Brunet highlights the artist’s intensive engagement with the old masters and his passionate dialogue with Spanish art,” said Scott Schaefer, senior curator of Paintings at the Getty Museum.

“Portrait of Madame Brunet” once belonged to the famous art collector and philanthropist Joan Whitney Payson, who also owned Vincent van Gogh’s “Irises”, purchased by the Getty in 1990. The well-published work, which is in excellent condition, has been loaned for exhibition to many major museums internationally.
