Klimt’s ‘Litzlberg’ leads Sotheby’s $200 million sale Gustav Klimt’s “Litzlberg am Attersee (Litzlberg on the Attersee)” sold for $40,4 million at Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern Art Sale on 2 November 2011.]]>

“Litzlberg am Attersee” was bought by dealer David Lachenmann, bidding on behalf of a private collector. However, the respectable price paid for the work is not a record for the artist, as “Kirche in Cassone, Landschaft mit Zypressen (Church in Cassone, Landscape with Cypresses)” was sold for £26.9 million ($43.2 million) at Sotheby’s London on February 2010.

The 110 × 110 cm. canvas had been part of museum collections in Salzburg since 1944, until it was restituted to Georges Jorisch, great-nephew of Viktor Zuckerkandl, whose collection was seized by the Gestapo and sold off during the WWII.

An excellent work by Gustave Caillebotte, “Le Pont d’Argenteuil et la Seine”, set a new auction record for the artist in achieving $18 million. The work is described by Sotheby’s as “a stunning example of Impressionist landscape painting at its most progressive and visually dynamic”. At his best, Caillebotte can rival with any other Impressionist painter, and this work could be a nice companion for Monet’s “Le Pont du chemin de fer à Argenteuil”, sold at Christie’s on May 6th 2008 for a stunning $41.5 million.

“L’Aubade”, a strong late work by Pablo Picasso, sold for $23 million, setting “a new record for a late work by the artist”, according to Sotheby’s. A sweet work by Claude Monet, “Antibes, le fort”, sold for $9,2 million, and Wassily Kandinsky’s strong “Weisser Klang (White Noise)” for $8,9 million. “La rêve (Rafaëla sur fond vert)” set a new artist record for de Tamara de Lempicka when it achieved $8,5 million.
