“Autorretrato en Miniatura” is the smallest self-portrait ever painted by Frida Kahlo, and, according to the press note released by Sotheby’s, “perhaps her most coquettish”. The two inches high work was featured in the 2005 exhibition “Frida Kahlo” at Tate Modern. Frida painted this self-portrait for the artist José Bartoli, who kept the work in his possession for half a century.

The sale will be also highlighted by three works by Rufino Tamayo. “Woman Playing With Her Child” was painted in 1946, and carries an estimate of $1 – 1,5 million. “Sandías (Watermelons)” from 1941 is estimated at $500/700,000. The group is completed by “Mujer en Extasis”, painted in 1973.

“Old Hamlet of Toledo” is an excellent cubist landscape by Diego Rivera, described at the catalogue as “exquisite and imposing”. Painted in 1911, the work is estimated at $800/1.2 million. “Morphology of Desire” is a typical work by Matta, the last great surrealist painter, painted in 1938 and estimated at $700/900,000.
