September 16th 2008 – Controversial but succesful. The first part of Sotheby’s auction of 223 new works by Damien Hirst (born 1965) totalled more than £70 million, a fantastic result for this “historic” -as Sotheby’s described it- auction. The combined total for the entire two-day auction to the remarkable sum of £111,464,800 (US$200,752,179/€140,160,487) – well in excess of its high estimate (est. £68-98 million).

The two stars of the auction were two formaldehyde ormaldehyde sculptures which have never been seen in public before. Lot 13, “The Golden Calf“, (calf, 18 carat gold, glass, goldplated steel, silicone and formaldehyde solution with Carrara marble plinth, 398.9 by 350.5 by 167.6cm, executed in 2008) sold for £10,345,250 (it was estimated at £8,000,000-12,000,000) and lot 5, “The Kingdom” (tiger shark, glass, steel, silicone and formaldehyde solution with steel plinth, 214 by 383.6 by 141.8cm., executed in 2008) sold for £9,561,250, having been estimated in £ 4,000,000 – 6,000,000

Lot 11, a 91 by 137.2 cm. gold-plated steel diptych entitled “Memories of / Moments With You” (estimated at £800,000-1,200,000) was sold for £2,617,250

“Fragments of Paradise” (lot 51) stainless steel and glass with manufactured diamonds, made £5,193,250 (€6,540,876 / US$ 9,368,104) – around five times the pre-sale estimate of £1-1.5 million.
