According to several sources, the artist died at her home in Darien, Connecticut, after a long illness, but no more details were given. Several art institutions have expressed their grief and offered their condolences to her family and friends.

About the artist
Helen Frankenthaler was born in New York City on December 12, 1928. She studied at the Dalton School and at Bennington College in Vermont. In 1958 she married fellow artist Robert Motherwell (1915–1991) and they divorced in 1971.

Influenced by Clement Greenberg, Jackson Pollock and Hans Hofmann, began painting her large-scale abstract expressionist works in the early 1950s. Her work has an important influence in artists such as Kenneth Noland or Morris Louis. In 2001, she was awarded with the National Medal of Arts.
