The Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arlesreceived official state approval in 2010 and aims toshowcase the Dutch master’s artistic heritage, while also asking questions about theresonance of his oeuvre in art today. The presentation of his paintings alongside works bycontemporary artists stimulates a fruitful dialogue, centred on interrogation andreflection. It should allow us both to reflect and widen the view that we have of the past, but also of the future

VAN GOGH LIVE! 7 April – 31 August 2014

The Fondation is opening its doors with a twofold exhibition: “Colours of the North, Colours of the South”, curated by Sjaar van Heugten, which chimes with a selection made by Bice Curiger of works by nine contemporary artists: Thomas Hirschhorn, Elizabeth Peyton, Raphael Hefti, Gary Hume, Bertrand Lavier, Camille Henrot, Bethan Huws, Guillaume Bruère and Fritz Hauser.

“Colours of the North, Colours of the South” is the first of a series of exhibitions covering Van Gogh’s oeuvre. It follows the artist’s palettes from his early years in the Netherlands, through his exploration of theories of colour, especially that of Eugène Delacroix, then the influence of the old masters, but also of the impressionists and the late nineteenth-century avant-garde, up until his discovery of the light of the South and the intensity of the colours it brings out.

Close collaboration between Van Gogh Museum and the New Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles

The Van Gogh Museum gives the Fondation various paintings for their opening exhibition “Colours of the North, Colours of the South” on loan, among which masterpieces such as “The Yellow House” and “Self-portrait with pipe and straw hat”. They also share knowledge and expertise with respect to security and collection management. Marije Vellekoop, Head of Collections of the Van Gogh Museum: “We welcome the opening of this new museum in Arles in the South of France; this way greater attention will be paid to Van Gogh’s work and life in the town where he painted so many of his most important works.
