A famous copy of Leonardo’s Gioconda is exhibited at the Dulwich Picture Gallery

The real and only: Leonardo’s Gioconda or Monna Lisa (Louvre)

The Gioconda or Monna Lisa, Leonardo da Vinci’s unquestionable masterpiece, has became such famous that even the copies painted by disciples or imitators are coveted by Museums and Art collectors, or even -as in this particular case- be the centrepiece of an exhibition in a such renowned institution as the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London.

The London gallery will exhibit, October 10th to February 11 th, 2007, a copy of the famous work by Leonardo painted by a French artists almost a century after da Vinci’s death. But in this case we are talking about a special copy: the work was owned by the Duke of Leeds, who gave it to the famous British artist Sir Joshua Reynolds, who initially believed this painting to be the original.
