Burning Desire
Beyond Limits: Monumental sculpture at Chatsworth The home of the Dukes of Devonshire at Chatsworth will stage the 2011 edition of ‘Beyond Limits’, Sotheby’s annual selling exhibition of monumental sculpture, featuring works by Damien Hirst, Takashi Murakami or Yayoi Kusama, among others.

“Beyond Limits 2011” will exhibit the latest sculptural work by Damien Hirst: “Legend” and “Myth”. The first is a “monumental winged horse stands atop its plinth as an icon of Hirst’s new modern mythologizing art”, as the catalogue describes it. Its counterpart is “Myth”, a white unicorn.
Measuring over 13 feet high, “Flower Matango (A)” is a monumental work by Takashi Murakami. This brightly coloured ball took a year-and-a-half to complete.
“Flowers That Bloom Tomorrow” is an important work by Yayoi Kusama. The catalogue notes that Kusama’s latest works “are amongst her most joyous creations and here the sculpture’s psychedelic colours provide a vibrant contrast with the natural landcape“.
Other artists featured in the exhibition include Marc Quinn -whose monumental “Burning Desire” “invites comparison with the voluptuous paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe“-, Nadim Karam -a Lebanese architect and urban-painter- Lynn Chadwick and William Turnbull.
