In ‘America By Car’“, the gallery explains in a press release, “Friedlander uses the quintessential icons of US culture – cars and open road – to explore contemporary America“. The 192 images exhibited are often shot from the driver’s seat of rental cars, using “side and rearview mirrors, windscreens, and side windows as framing devices“.

The works at ‘America By Car’ are presented in a square-crop format, as many other recent images by Friedlander. According to the gallery, these photographs “complicate and invigorate the most bereft of rural scenes“.

Prior to its exhibition at the Timothy Taylor Gallery, “Lee Friedlander: America By Car” was shown at The Whitney Museum from September 4th to November 28th, 2010

Lee Friedlander was born in Aberdeen, Washington in 1934. He studied photography at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and moved to New York in 1956. Friedlander has been the subject of several exhibitions -including a major traveling exhibition at the MoMA in 2005- and he has published over twenty books.
